Utilizing Scrapbooking To Keep Your Memories Alive For A Lifetime

By: Johnathan Sproles

As a creative way of preserving memories most important to you, scrapbooking is the perfect hobby. Scrapbooking allows you to be imaginative and inventive while making a treasured family heirloom.
It is necessary to get materials together before you start scrapbooking. Perhaps you have a closet full of old photographs in shoeboxes that have been left ignored. Don’t be afraid to really dig in and see what you have to work with!
Separate your pictures into whatever categories you plan to scrapbook by. Using these specific categories will allow you to enhance your scrapbooking themes. Some categories you might consider are family vacations, high school, your travels, sports events, the homecoming dance, or any other memory you would like to preserve. Select one idea to base your first scrapbook on and don't stray from it. That will ensure that your scrapbook is a cohesive keepsake.
Pick your theme, then choose the pictures that fit for each category. Your "best" photos are those which capture the mood you are looking for and these are not always the ones which are posed or those which are the most aesthetically attractive. When choosing your pictures, don't discount a photo that is off-center or has a portion you don't want to focus on; all of this can be fixed with a few snips of the scissors. Note that the photographs you preserved for your scrapbook can be used to fill up the pages efficiently.
Along with your photos, you may want to find other mementos that are related to your category. Anything that is meaningful can be added to your scrapbook pages such as ticket stubs, boarding passes, playbills or decorative pressed flowers.
After that you will want to create the layout for your page. This is the part of scrapbooking that is the most rewarding although it is the hardest to do. Really let your imagination run wild! Be creative with the way you lay out your pages. You want each page of scrapbook to tell a story and be part of a cohesive idea. You can construct the background for your pages using scraps that you can make a collage from, pieces of felt or fabric, or any other alternative material. You can really use anything that will give interest to your page.
Place the photos on top of these interesting backgrounds to create something unique. Before you glue anything down, play with the layout to strike the balance on your pages that you find the most satisfactory. Obtaining the specific look that you want to achieve will require you to crop and cut photos, as well as make adjustments to the other mementos you plan to include. This step can be extremely tedious, but you don't want to hurry through it. And, the personalized feeling that the scrapbook conveys will allow it to be remembered forever.
The internet has several layouts that you can choose from just research. Inspiration can be found in pre-made layout guides, but in the end you should choose a layout that you like.

Remember to include your finishing touches. To your page, you can add text explaining your photographs, gems, glitter, buttons or anything else that may be interesting to others viewing your page.
The most important thing to remember when creating your scrapbook is that not only is your scrapbook a physical representation of your memory, it is the actual process that makes it worthwhile. If you put your heart and soul into scrapbooking you won't be able to help being happy with the final result. Joyful scrapbooking!
