The Price of Cloth Diapers - Significant Cost Benefits

By: Dawn Michelle

There are a a number of arguments showing why it's beneficial to consider alternatives to using disposable diapers. A couple of the most obvious are the monitary benefits and the benefit to the Earth.
When starts learning about cloth diapers, one may be shocked by the "sticker price" of top of the line cloth diapers. The price per cloth diaper may be up to $20. Each baby needs a minimum of 10 to 20 cloth diapers to avoid the need for too many loads of laundry per week. The initial cost can be as much as $400. However, that is the only product cost for two to four years since the cloth diapers are reusable and are sizable for babies weighing between 7 to 35 pounds.
So what is the benefit in regard to cost? First, lets think about the expense of disposable diapers:
The average infant will need about eight diapers each day which will cost $0.30 for each disposable diaper. At this rate, the price of disposable diapers comes to $875 over twelve months. If you multiply that amount of money by the amount of years a baby usually needs diapers (let's say 3 years), you'll find that you will have to spend over $2,600 on disposable diapers!
Lets take a look at how much cloth diapers cost:
20 sizable reusable cloth diapers cost $400,as is stated above.
That's all there is to it. We also need to figure in the extra charge for washing cloth diapers. Washing costs about $1. 50 per wash and you'll do about 3 per week or less which calculates to $235 per year x 3 years = $705. Cloth diapers cost $1105 over a three year period.
The table below depicts the significant savings when using cloth diaper compared with disposable diapers over a three year period.
Disposable diapers: $2,625
Cloth Diapers: $1,105
Money saved by using Cloth Diapers: $1,520
================================
Money save annually: $ 506
The money saved is only the beginning. There are also, significant ecological advantages.
Environmental Factors
* Over the course of the diapering phase, one baby will contribute between 8,000 and 10,000 disposable diapers to landfills.
* Disposable diaper is very difficult to decompose: it takes 500 years when it is in open area, under the effect of sunlight and air, and it will last forever if the diaper is in a landfill, as it is covered by other waste.
* Fecel disposal is illegal in landfills, but this is not enforced where disposable diapers are concerned. One danger in disposable diapers is the leakage factor, which contaminates groundwater, spreading polio and other serious diseases.
The tests on laboratory animals reveal that Dioxins that are produced by the chlorinated plastics used in disposable diapers are associated with birth defects, cancer, genetic problems ,liver diseases and also with immune system depression.
Families can both economize on diapers as well as contribute to conserving environment if they look for alternatives as disposable diapers are both expensive and hazardous to baby's health as well as to environment. The alternative of cloth diapers can save families money as well as help save the Earth.
