The Growing Popularity of Historical Wall Tapestries

By: Angela Dawson-Field

People have used textiles for many years for decorative purposes and the need to have cloth combined with a desire to enhance our surroundings has seen the emergence of textile art. Tapestries are among the most sophisticated of this art form and are enjoying a rise in popularity as people seek alternatives for wall décor. The history and culture behind the tapestry as well as their tactile nature has ensured they remain a positive choice for home improvers. Tapestries have been present in history from early Medieval times and are as sought after today as they were in previous centuries.

Traditional Designs
Despite modern tapestry designs being available the traditional tapestries are the more popular. These might include Gothic designs, detailed Rococo works or those from the Baroque era, reflecting the long history of tapestry through the ages. The appeal stems from the connection to history that these tapestries possess and the stories they tell. Francois Boucher tapestries were seen at the Court of Louis XV at Versailles whilst the Bayeux Tapestry celebrates the victory of one nation over another. Eastern tapestry exudes colonial blended with the exotic. This combination of history with art and quality is irresistible to art lovers looking to add a special touch to interior home design.

There are many historical tapestry designs which continue to appeal, particularly those from the Middle Ages, seen as the Golden Age of tapestry art. The Lady and the Unicorn is one series that has continued to fascinate and delight, combining legend and mystery with traditional Medieval values. The artist’s original vision is also maintained through modern weaving technique and in reproducing work to such high detail.

Increasing in popularity
Tapestry wall hangings are increasingly being appreciated as works of art and are becoming more popular in the home. A blend of modern weaving techniques with the sophistication of a classical piece of art is an ideal combination for modern decor. These exquisite pieces blend craftsmanship with artistry and tastefulness to enhance the walls of the modern home. The exotic nature of Eastern tapestry and the vivid nature of the Medieval form often surprise and captivate the modern art lover through the expression, the attention to detail and the exquisite nature of the craft. Themes weaving through the tapestry such as the senses and unicorns are as popular today as the day the original tapestries were created. The tapestry is an art form that rises above the plethora of mass production and stands individually as a true work of art.

A captivating appeal
The tapestry is making a comeback through a revival of traditional décor chosen to appeal to the modern home. An individual work of art due to the unique nature of the weaving process, a tapestry adds charm and eloquence to home décor. Tapestry wall hangings offer a diverse option to the consumer looking for something out of the ordinary to furnish their home which blends with the modern way of life.
