The Financial Burden of Root Canals

By: Robert Melkonyan

Hearing the term root canal can send shivers down a person's spine according to the experience is that that person has had the past with a dentist. A root canal is one of the most year procedures by patients who have had a close encounter with the dental drill, the fact of the matter is that those patients who are in need of a root can now are already in excruciating pain due to their oral condition.

When a dentist performs a root canal he drills into the affected tooth until the pulp is exposed. The pulp is inside the tooth and it is mostly a soft tissue that interconnects the hard structure with the nerves that go through the canals. Once the pulp at the nerves have been removed the tooth is practically dead, at this point there is nothing that will cause pain to the patient because the part that might have been infected has already been taken care of, the next step is to perform a filling and to put in place a crown.

Root canals often have different costs, the costs of a root canal into one of the front teeth will normally fluctuate from $400-$600 at a root canal that is performed on the molars ranges from $500-$800, this is on a per tooth basis. The difference in the costs lies of the fact that a front tooth only has one root at the molars usually have three or more roots which is why they require more attention and work.

Those who are in need of a root canal have no choice but to go to the dentist because the pain can be so intense that there is no longer a choice. The routine of procedure is intended to clean the affected area and kill the nerve that is causing the pain.

A dental insurance will often cover the costs associated with root canals at the prescription drugs that are given to the patient after the root canal has been performed. Without proper insurance a root canal procedure can be very expensive, this is a painful fact that could make things even worse for a person who is uninsured and is in desperate need of this dental procedure.

Just like the pain caused by an infected tooth cannot be ignored, acquiring proper dental insurance is of the utmost importance in order to receive proper care and prevent future health and financial complications.
