It can be very hard for people who are older or those who suffer from joint diseases to stand up on their own. This problem can be exasperated by sitting for extended periods of time. A common solution to this problem is to use a lift chair.
Lift chairs are special types of mobility aids that are used to help a person stand or sit. It is basically a recliner that uses a powerful lifting mechanism to raise the recliner into the air. When the recliner is fully raised it is easy for the seated individual to transfer to a standing position without assistance.
These devices come in many different shapes and sizes. Some models are available that utilize dual motors and can support over 500 pounds, but most support around 300 pounds. It is generally a good practice to allow your self some wiggle room in regards to the weight capacity. For instance, if you weigh 250 pounds then you would want to get a lift that is at least rated at 300 pounds.

The design of the chair usually plays a big factor in the selection process. There are many elegant designs available and so it is rarely hard to find something to match your décor. Some models utilize a classic colonial look, while other lift chairs use a very modern design. One company NexIdea makes many quality lift chairs. Their goal is to create a beautiful modern looking chair that is also a lift chair. They have succeeded in this goal and provide a great looking chair.
Several fabrics are available as well. Golden Technologies, a manufacturer of quality mobility products, uses a very special fabric called Brisa. Brisa is similar to leather, but has much better breathability. It is of polyurethane construction and includes a system that allows for much better ventilation, so you do not get that sticky feeling that you get from leather. Brisa stays cooler in warm weather and it is completely resistant to stains and even the toughest stains can be removed with only a warm damp rag.
Lift chairs are frequently operated by using a remote control that is attached to the chair. Since it is attached to the chair it can not be lost as easily as a TV remote. The remote can be attached to either side of the chair. Some lift chairs use buttons that are built into the armrest in place of a remote control. If the chair is configured with heat or massage, then this is activated by using the remote control.
There are some that can be placed as close as 6 inches from the wall. These chairs are called wall huggers and are great if you are working with limited space.
A lift chair is a very good way to make sure you or someone you love can stand without assistance.
