How To Use The Whistle To Recall Your Dog

By: AnthonyMaxwellpapp

Before anything else, realize that it is in your best interest that your dog always feels glad to come back to you. If you are in the habit of calling your dog back only to immediately reprimand him, he will get the impression that your calls are for reprimands and possible punishment. It is the same when you attempt to teach him whistle recalls.

If your dog senses that you are recalling him to be punished it would come hesitantly. Bear in mind that he is watching both your tone of voice and countenance. Even the way the whistles sounds could make or mar your dog’s whistle recall training. Let him know that answering you quickly is appreciated… make some happy gesticulations and touch him fondly. Touching reassures your dog of your closeness and care.

Experts advice that you make your dog sit at a distance and then step away from him, keep some distance between you and then combine voice and whistle by saying “come” and blowing the whistle immediately. Do not start with very long distances, rather, increase the distance as he begins to associate the whistle with a recall.

Show him that you are pleased that he answered your call quickly; make some happy body movements like clapping your hands etc. Remember to use a high pitch voice when calling him to return, if you are not using the whistle. But ensure that your call does not sound threatening.

A successful whistle recall command stems from an established relationship of trust and understanding between you and your dog. If you make him feel that it is a good thing to answer you quickly each time you call he will always do your bidding. Your dog is a sensible animal. He wants to be certain that whatever move he makes is beneficial in terms of praises and possible reward. Instructing your dog on the distance whistle recall commands will be less hard if you follow the above advice. Just make your whistle recalls firmly without sounding threatening.

All said, distance recall training is very important because you should be in a position to recall your dog from whatever it is engaged in, and from a distance. However, realize that you may not be able to achieve success as quickly as you desire, but persistent uniformity of commands will surely get your dog to eventually learn to react positively to your whistle recalls from long distances.
